Landscape / Restoration

APEX has been very active in the supply of both compost to the landscape industry and that, which would be considered for large land restoration schemes.

Many of the leading landscape contractors in the UK regularly purchase compost adhering with the APEX specification for compost from one the 15 APEX sites throughout the country these include: Rainham, Essex; Pitsea, Essex; Lount, Leicester; Kibworth, Leicester; Packington, Birmingham; Croydon, Surrey; Clifton Marsh, Preston; Dewsbury, Huddersfield; Rufforth, York; Porchester, Hants; Basingstoke, Hants; Chibolton, Stockbridge.

APEX not only supply the compost but also get heavily involved in the design of the product advising on the soil science element of the project. APEX possesses in house soil scientists which, over a number of years, have been involved on some of the country's most prestigious landscape projects and have been an integral part of the landscape team as well as being the contractor undertaking the project itself.

Examples of this type of work where the APEX compost has been selected can be listed as follows:

Eden Project in Cornwall
Millennium Site in Greenwich
Prospect Park HQ for British Airways
T5 British Airways new Terminal at Heathrow
Jubilee Park at Canary Wharf – winner of the BALI Grand Award
TAG McLaren HQ at Woking in Surrey
Crossways Business Park, Kent
Vodaphone HQ in Newbury

These projects specified and used APEX compost or soils combined with composts and the results of landscape scheme is testimony to the products supplied. Collectively 350,000m3 where supplied from the group which is a phenomenal achievement.

APEX via Freeland Horticulture provide a specification and application guide for compost use within landscape. This specification should be selected by Landscape Architects within the landscape specification as this is considered as the blue print for green composts.

APEX will continue to supply compost to this market sector and contact should be made through Freeland Horticulture for advice and pricing.

APEX Green Compost vs Mushroom Compost

With the decline in the availability of mushroom compost across the UK, green compost is taking its place and as a result of the APEX sites throughout the country, Freeland can supply a cost effective product locally. (Click here to see UK map)

It also must be pointed out that Green Compost possesses a number of beneficial properties over spent mushroom compost and these should be noted.

1 The salt level (EC) in green compost is substantially lower than mushroom compost, making more applicable for the growing of plants.
2 The pH of green compost may appear alkaline (8), however, it has no significant liming value i.e. it will take the pH to which is applied.

Mushroom compost has already had lime added as part of the processes, which in turn will elevate the pH of the soil it is applied.
3 The fact that green compost has been fully composted prior to incorporation the impact of this humus material will have maximum effect.

Mushroom compost is partly composted and will continue to break down once applied to the soil. This effectively reduces the impact as the compost breaks down and in some cases only 50% of that applied is still performing i.e. half the price but only half the product.
